Dead Skeletons

Image
Sane Halloween Observer More familiar faces (or Totenskelett a.k.a. dead skeletons ) from German-language catalogs for the celebration of Karneval . This time from 1974 --- the last image (a nautical pirate theme) contains a skeleton figure (articulated, embossed, diecut) that was here available in 2 sizes - 70 cm (~27 1/2") and 125 cm (~ 50").  Update 12-13-2015 Per some additional queries to those selling these old catalogs, as well as further research by another into more recent editions... it appears years 71/72 , 74 , and 76 have nearly 90% (?) of the same content, though I have not personally observed this with actual copies. I've been told the skeleton seen above didn't always have the same sizes available from year to year.

Ten Little Goblins

Image
Sane Halloween Observer Following is a collage of pages scanned from a 1960's public service announcement on Halloween safety. The actual printed piece is a wallet-sized 3"x4" fold-out booklet from the Minnesota Department of Health printed in 1962 by Imagination Inc.  Mod, kitschy, and rather grim, the story is a cross between a certain politically questionable rhyme of the late 1800's with humor reminiscent of Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies .

Seven Spooks in Narrenfibel 1968 / 1970

Image
Sane Halloween Observer Here's something puzzling for a research enthusiast... This entry is written with no definitive assumptions of what the mysterious images shown here might mean in regards to production dates, but it will perhaps be of interest to vintage Halloween collectors? And perhaps someone out there can provide clear details on the history and dates of this apparently long-running decor and costume magazine?  For better detail - the images below link to the full image gallery by flickr contributor EYE-talian  where you can see these in much larger sizes. Vintage collectors will of course recognize the bottom-most row of characters on page 39 titled "The Ghosts in Haunted Castle." Anyone care to guess their story? The corresponding description reads something like this...  "#16 Block Mountain freize, 40 cm wide, 2m long, vibrant green wall strip of crepe paper with 7 different spooks together of embossed cardboard ... Frieze 11.50" ...
