A Shelf Full of Vintage Halloween Collectibles

Image
THR's Archive Collection Rarely seen content by Beistle The Halloween Retrospect librarian doesn't have a great deal of time for photo-hyping the THR collection online - preferring instead to keep most items safely in storage until time to examine for deeper research and/or photographing for inclusion in reference guides such as recent art-book surveys So, the newest shelf display (above) full of vintage Beistle Halloween collectible envelopes is a bit of a rarity... dreamed up on a lark... as both a means to consider possible subject matter for future publications while simultaneously celebrating the existing six THR books for sale on Etsy . See the Instagram post (below from @halloweenretrrospecs ) for additional detail views of these vintage Halloween collectibles by Beistle . There are nearly 50 original envelopes (most with original content) of various products ranging from complete party outfits to individual envelopes for select items such as invitations, etc. (Note tha...

Vintage Christmas Collectibles Sources

Image
Christmas Sample & More from THR Novelty Catalogs! To backtrack just a bit... in the early spring months of 2025 a seasonally anachronous book arrived for sale at The Halloween Respect bookstore (digest THR, Volume 4 ) featuring quite a bit of Christmas imagery. Why? Because during chilly winter months of 2024 (see THR blog " To: Halloween, From: Xmas " ) new research at THR discovers holiday ads (both Christmas and Easter) for faux stained- glass windows like the Halloween-themed versions appearing in Halloween Artifacts, Volume 1: Lighting . In fact, THR develops a rather large collection of primary sources in the form of newspaper ads from across the decade of the 1940's (example below) with one ad from Wisconsin proudly providing their vendor's name: Milton Bradley! (This is new information at a time when most guides are still recording these as circa 1920's maybe by Dennison or Gibson) Easter Cathedral Windows by Milton Bradley  as seen in  1947 advertis...

Research Tools for Vintage Halloween Collectibles

Image
A World of Online Halloween Resources The Halloween Retrospect (and Bindlegrim ) are very appreciative of Etsy bookstore customers who were kind enough to take the time and leave their latest book reviews of new digest The Halloween Retrospect, Volume 4 . Thank you one and all - and see below at the close of this blog entry for a handful of those review. I appreciate that so many people are enjoying these at printed primary sources given their content of visual data in tables and charts, identification posters, numerous examples, and even more entertaining pieces like the new Bindlegrim homage meant to provide tangible examples of vintage working processes.  In the meantime, this blog entry echoes some of the content recently discussed not only in THR, V4 print publication ( and a total of 5 books for sale as of this date ), but THR's recent blog entry Collectibles Research Tools that considers many of the online sources many forget... likely because those sources aren't s...

Halloween Eye-Candy

Image
THR publications as of October 2025 THR publications as of March 2025    Halloween Eye-Candy A goal for The Halloween Retrospect's antique/vintage Halloween collectibles art survey  Halloween Artifacts V1:Lighting is a focus on imagery (maintaining a heavy-lean on data from primary sources). The result is a full-color 8-1/2" x 11" book that displays 100+ pages of large-format photos of lanterns, shades and glow-in-dark diecut decor. The end result presents to collectors unusual views and/or previously unseen objects (with enough room in the layout to include vendor timelines and catalog samples). Below is a page sample that hopefully gives readers an idea of book contents cover to cover (and see  THR's bookstore on Etsy  to read reviews like the flattering one included below). Cover and page samples of  Halloween Artifacts, V1: Lighting    Book review of  Halloween Artifacts, V1: Lighting    Given that THR has now published a handf...
